Blair Castle & Gardens

Museum | Pitlochry | Scotland | United Kingdom

Blair Castle & Gardens in Pitlochry, Scotland, has been the ancestral home of the Atholl family for over seven centuries, providing a deep insight into Scottish history and culture. The castle combines medieval, Georgian, and Victorian architecture, housing over 30 rooms filled with Scottish artworks, furniture, and military artifacts. Highlights include the Victorian ballroom adorned with 175 pairs of antlers, the entrance hall displaying weapons from the Battle of Culloden, the Georgian picture staircase, and the grand reception and dining rooms.

The castle gardens encompass a nine-acre restored garden in Georgian style known as Hercules Garden, featuring fruit trees, a Chinese bridge pavilion, and a variety of 18th-century and contemporary sculptures. Diana's Grove, a tranquil forest with some of the tallest trees in Britain, and the ruins of St. Bride's Kirk, serving as the final resting place of Jacobite leader Bonnie Dundee, are also part of the estate.

The castle is also home to Europe's only private army, the Atholl Highlanders, who perform regularly at special occasions.

Blair Castle & Gardens is a significant cultural heritage site that offers visitors a comprehensive insight into Scottish history, architecture, and garden art.

Blair castle and Gardens was by far, my favourite castle that we saw on our two week tour of Scotland and Ireland. The sheet amount of historical weapons and equipment were very impressive, as the castle walls are absolutely covered with them in intricate patterns. We also enjoyed the lone bagpiper, who marched his patrol and played for us. The castle is set near the village of Blair Atholl (New Ireland), in Perthshire. For 19 generations, the Stewarts and Murray’s and their clan chief, the Duke of Atholl have lived here. The castle was started in 1269 as a tower and eventually changed into a Georgian castle and it has had extensive renovations. During WW1 it was used as a hospital. It even has a hydroelectric power system from 1908. The cattle is also the home to the Atholl Highlanders, the ceremonial infantry unit, only private army in Europe and the bodyguards to the Duke. The Atholl Gathering and Highland Games are also held here.

This is a great place to visit. We got to see the piper playing, which was a bonus. The truly great memory, one which my wife and I will always remember though, is the kindness of two of the staff. We were stupid enough to assume that if there was a bus to the castle, there would also be one back to Pitlochry. There wasn't. We told one of the staff at the castle and she seemed more upset and flustered than us. We soon figured there was no other way except to ask for a ride back. We got lucky with the second person we asked, who was also an estate employee. It turned out that he was just driving back home to his place on the estate, but he actually dropped us all the way to Pitlochry, about 15 Kms away. I offered to pay him just because of the huge inconvenience, and he turned me down. Clearly, the people who run the estate are doing something right to have employees who are kind and super helpful.

What a beautiful castle with an interesting walled garden. The lone piper playing was the icing on the cake. Unfortunately the quality of both the coffee, (dry) cake and the customer service in the cafe was a real disappointment. Otherwise well worth a visit.
